1. However, not everyone who has HIV progresses to AIDSS. With proper treatment, called "antiretroviral therapy" (ART), a person can keep the level of HIV virus in his or her body low. ART is the use of HIV medicines to fight against HIV infection.
2. HIV is a lot like other viruses, including those that cause "flu" or common cold. However, there is an important difference. Over time, the immune system can clear most viruses out of body.
3. Over time, HIV can destroy so many of CD4 cells that the body can't fight against, infections and diseases anymore. When that happens, HIV infection can lead to AIDS, the final stage of HIV infection.
4. "HIV" stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. To understand what that means, let's break it down.
5. That isn't the case with HIV. The human immune system can't seem to get rid of it. That means that once a person has HIV, he or she has it for life.
6. 'H' (Human) - This particular virus can only infect human being; 'I' (Immunodeficiency) - HIV weakens the immune system by destroying important cells that fight diseases and infections; 'V' (Virus) - A virus can only reproduce itself by taking over a cell in the body of its host.
