  • Penguins are sea-birds in the family Spheniscidae. They use their wings to ‘fly’ underwater, but they cannot fly in the air. They eat fish and other sea food. Penguins lay their eggs and raise their babies on land.

Penguins live only in the Southern Hemisphere of the world: Antarctica, New Zealand, southern Australia, South Africa and South America. The furthest north they get is the Galapagos Islands

Penguins love to swim in the ice cold ocean water. They can swim very fast and can leap out of the water and dive deep looking for food. A layer of fat together with a layer of air keeps penguins warm in the cold water and almost any weather.

All penguins have a white belly and a dark (mostly black) back. Penguins cannot fly, but they can swim very well. Their wings have become stiff and small swimming flippers. They have good hearing and can see underwater. The white and black colors are countershading to help them hide when they swim.

  • Penguin's body is adapted for swimming.
It has a large head, short neck, yet elongated body.
It also has a short tail,
Its legs and webbed feet are set far back on the body - that's what gives them the upright posture.
